6 Do’s and Don’ts for an Easy-Breezy Move

Moving to a new home can be an extremely stressful process for even the most organized and experienced homeowner. Our experts and Imlach and Collins have assembled some common mistakes and tips for success to help you move like a pro.

  1. Do involve the whole family!

Get everyone involved when it’s time to pack up. Even if you’ve got little kids on your moving crew, giving them a part in the packing process can help them feel like a part of the move, and speed up the process along the way! Have them fold their own clothes or box up their own toys, that way when it’s time to unpack they know where to find their belongings, rather than having to search through all your boxes. The more the merrier!

  2. Don’t leave boxes unmarked.

The last thing you want is to end up with stacks of boxes in your beautiful new home and no idea which items are in what boxes. Instead, indicate what is inside each box, and even what room that box belongs to so that unpacking can be as simple as possible.

  3. Do re-use packing materials.

Search your home for boxes and other packing materials instead of purchasing new ones. You’ve probably got more boxes laying around your house than you think, and reusing them can save your wallet and the environment at the same time!

  4. Don’t pick just any moving company.

Be sure to do your due diligence when it comes to selecting a moving company. Check reviews from past customers, see what the Better Business Bureau has on record about them, and check to see that they are legitimate and properly licensed.

  5. Do stay organized

Packing up all of your belongings can be a daunting prospect, but instead of blindly diving in headfirst, sit down and plan out the process with your family. Come up with a checklist of areas that need to be packed, items that can’t be forgotten, and tasks that could get easily forgotten. That way, when moving day finally comes, you can rest assured that everything is properly taken care of.

  6. Don’t forget to take care of yourself!

Moving can be stressful for you and for your whole family. Be sure to take breaks to eat meals, drink water, and get plenty of sleep, otherwise you’ll end up with a cranky crew which won’t be as efficient or enjoyable.
