How to Move With Pets

Moving with pets can make a move significantly more difficult and stressful. There are several things you can do prior to and after the move to help ensure your pets are safe and comfortable during the relocation process.

Be Sure To Plan Ahead.

  • Ensure that your pet has a collar with updated contact information in case your pet gets lost in the new neighborhood after the move.

  • It is recommended that you make sure your animal is up to date on all shots and print verification of this before traveling. This is often necessary if you travel by plane because airlines will often require this.

  • You may need to purchase a comfortable crate that can be used during the relocation process.

  • It is strongly recommended that you research veterinarians in the area of your new home both in case of an emergency and for future use. This can be completed with a quick google search or by asking for a reference from your realtor, relocation company, or friends in the area.

  • If you are traveling by plane to your destination, contact the airline ahead of time and learn about the animal regulations you will be facing during your travel.

  • Create a travel kit for your pet with food, water and some familiar toys for your pet. Be sure to use these when you arrive because it will create a sense of familiarity for your pet and aid in acclimating your pet to the new environment.

  • If you know your animal has problems with anxiety consider using an anti-anxiety medication prescribed by your current veterinarian. Be sure to contact your veterinarian ahead of time to get the right medication before the move.

Other Options.

  • If moving your animal with you is too stressful, hard, or poses a risk, there are options for animal transport services. These options are often expensive, but they may give you peace of mind knowing that your pet is being give professional attention.
