Packing effectively and efficiently is one of the most important parts of moving to a new home. Ironically enough, it’s also the one step people dread the most. Whether you’ve decided to pack and move on your own, or if you’re hiring packers and movers to do the job for you, there are some steps you can take to make the process more efficient. You want to ensure the most valuable items reach your new home as safely as possible, so taking some precautions and not rushing the process could prove to be beneficial for you. Here are some of the first steps you should take before you even begin the packing process.

Take Inventory And Sort Items

Most packing and moving services will suggest taking a complete inventory of the items you have in your home and sort them by level of importance, fragile items and any other category you deem important. When you know exactly what you’re working with, you’ll be able to at least know where to begin packing and can organize boxes accordingly. Make your own version of a checklist that’s easy for you to refer back to, since this will be your master list throughout the moving process.

During your inventory and sorting process, be sure to take notes on each item so you can categorize them accordingly. You’ll be surprised at how many possessions you’ve accumulated over the years, so you may be able to help yourself out, as well as your packers and movers, by getting rid of some of them. Be sure to update your checklist along the way so you will remember what you kept versus what you decided to part ways with.

Consider Purging Unneeded Possessions

Even though you have an abundance of possessions in your current home, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need all of them at your new home. Any home moving service will suggest only taking the necessary items with you, and donating, selling or discarding the rest. Things like decorations, old books, movies, shoes, clothing or other things you don’t use very often may be good candidates to get purged. Doing so will save yourself a lot of time throughout the packing process. And your packers and movers will also appreciate the fewer boxes they have to load and unload throughout the move.

Decide Which Room To Start Packing First

Once you’ve inventoried your entire home and purged the items you don’t need, you can actually start packing. Many packing and moving services suggest identifying a room to pack first, and don’t move to another room until it’s completely packed up. One suggestion is to pack up the guest bedroom or another room you don’t use as often. This will move the process forward, but also let you keep some sense of normalcy since the rooms you use the most haven’t been packed yet. The packing process will take some time, so starting with the least-used room will help.

You can also consider packing the most difficult rooms first as well. These would include rooms like the garage, attic, closets, basement and other areas that have difficult items to pack. Things like heavy tools and bulky items may not be used often, so get those out of the way early on in the packing process. If the items are too heavy for you to pack on your own, then you can organize them so they are ready for your packers and movers to easily load them into the truck for you on moving day.

Identify What Can Be Packed in Advance

Assuming you have some time to slowly pack your belongings, use your inventory list to determine what can be boxed up in advance. These could be items you didn’t necessarily want to purge, but also don’t need to use between now and the time you arrive at your new home. Toys, rarely-used cooking devices, electronics, decorations, collectibles, jewelry and other similar items can be packed up well in advance.

Getting these non-essential items boxed up first will allow you to take your time and have a sense of how long the process will take and how you want to organize everything. Then when your home moving service comes, there won’t be any delay. The packers and movers want the moving process to go just as smoothly as you do, so taking these simple steps will help out tremendously.

Contact Local Packers and Movers

It’s easy and common to feel lost or overwhelmed when the packing process hasn’t even started yet, so don’t feel bad. That’s why packers and movers are available to help make the process a little easier for you. Even if you want to do a lot of the packing on your own, there’s no harm in contacting packing and moving services to get some advice. And if you plan on using their services for the moving process, they will actually be even more willing to give you advice since it will make the move much more efficient and smoother for them as well.
