The city, as of the 2016 census had a population of 39, 160 and is 13 miles away from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. History of Hurst

Settlement in Hurst dates back to the 1800s. Farmers began to settle in Hurst in the 1840s and settlers started to trickle in after the Civil War. The settlers included Indiana families, the families of William L. Hurst, Jeff Souder and Daniel Arwine. The Indiana families established a school and a church in the city in the 1870s. The Arwine family, on the other hand, grew as a farming and ranching community up until 1903 when the Rock Island line was built. Hurst, in exchange for a depot named after him, donated land. Despite the fact that the place was first labeled Hurst by the Rock Island, it was soon renamed Ormel, as there was already another Hurst in Coryell County. The name Ormel operated between 1904 and 1908. In 1909, the budding community was renamed, Hurst.

The city, however, begun to flourish in the 1940s when there were a few grocery stores, cafes and filling stations opening in the area. A brick school was erected by the Works Project Administration in 1940, making the city a bedroom community for Fort Worth. In 1949, the Hurst post office was established. Later in 1951, a $3 million plant was opened by Bell Helicopter, pioneering the aviation industry in Texas and opening up the city of Hurst. The incorporation of Hurst as a general law city happened on September 25, 1952, at a time when the total population was at 2,700.
