Garland History

Garland began as two separate towns in the mid-1800s. After a dispute over which town should have ownership of the nearest post office, the argument was settled by moving the location to a point between the two towns. This area between the towns became known as Garland. Eventually, all three areas merged into the city of Garland that exists today. Garland was named after Augustus Hill Garland, a U.S. Attorney General. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.

Garland has one general-care hospital, the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center. This is a 113-bed facility that offers services for a variety of health-related issues. Some of these include emergency care, intensive care, heart and vascular, orthopedics, oncology, women’s health, diagnostic imaging and neuroscience. There are also several hospitals in nearby Dallas that serve the Garland community.

Garland also has two mental-health facilities. These are Garland Behavioral Hospital and the nearby Sundance Hospital of Dallas. The Behavioral Hospital treats patients ages 18 and older for issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, aging issues, depression, anxiety and stress-related problems. Sundance treats patients of all ages for chemical dependency and mental illness.

Garland is very similar to most suburbs and has all of the fast-food chains present that one would expect to see in a U.S. city. Its fine-dining establishments consist mostly of upscale steak houses. Some of these include; Texas, Silver Fox Steakhouse and Chamberlains Steak and Chop House.

Some of the moderately-priced restaurants include; Desperado’s, Babe’s Chicken Dinner House, Spring Creek BBQ and Siciliano’s Italian restaurant. Downtown Garland has a number of cheaper eating establishments and diners such as Mainstreet Deli, Judy’s Cafe and Sali’s Pizza and Pasta.

Things to do in Garland

Being located just outside of Dallas, means quick access to professional sporting events. Dallas is the home of the Dallas Cowboys NFL team, Mavericks NBA team and the Texas Rangers MLB team.

The Granville Arts Center is owned and operated by the city of Garland. The main section includes two theaters that seat 200 and 720 audience members. The center is also connected to The Plaza Theater which seats 350 spectators. The center even includes a 6,500 sq. ft. atrium that is used for conventions, banquets and balls.

Some of the historic points in Garland to visit include the Downtown Historic District, Travis College Hill Historic District and the Garland Landmark Museum. The city also has sixty parks and six different recreation centers. A few of the other fun locations to see in Garland include the Nicholson Memorial Library and the Nickelrama Arcade.
