Denton History

The city of Denton was incorporated in 1866 in Denton County, formed through a Texas land grant in 1846. Both entities were named after Texas pioneer and militiaman, John B. Denton. It became an agricultural trade center.

The arrival of the railroad in 1881 stimulated growth. In 1890, the University of North Texas was founded. Texas Woman’s University came in 1903. The growth of the universities led to business prosperity and cultural development.

When the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1974, Denton’s growth accelerated. Heavy manufacturers from outside of Texas opened operations in Denton, and the city continued to grow and prosper.

Campus shuttle bus service links North Central State College, Texas Woman’s College and the University of North Texas.

On-demand public transportation is offered by Span-Transportation. Users must submit applications and be approved. Handicap-accessible vans are available. Transportation is by reservation on shared vans or buses.

Boating and fishing, skiing and swimming are just a few of the activities that Lewisville Lake supports. There’s camping, hiking, biking, and golf.

The Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum is considered one of the top attractions with plenty of exhibits about local area history of Denton County. Both residents and locals enjoy a visit to the historical building which still serves as the courthouse.

The Bayless-Selby House Museum provides a fascinating look back at turn-of-the-century living. The Denton Firefighters Museum provides a look back at firefighting through the years. The Little Chapel in the Woods, located on Texas Woman’s University, is considered one of Texas’ 20 most outstanding achievements.
