The 7 Basic Types of Moving Boxes

As the final steps of your move are drawing to a close, there still remains the laborious task of packing up your belongings. While this task cannot be avoided, unnecessary trips to the store to get more boxes as well as a lower risk of damaging any of your possessions is entirely possible. There are different types of boxes that you should be aware of, each with their own purpose.

7 Different Kinds of Boxes

Packing up your belongings is an essential part of any move and is oftentimes the most dreaded process. By knowing what each box is for, this process should become drastically easier.

Small Box

Capable of holding 1.5 cubic feet, these boxes are useful for the smaller items that may not be suited for a larger box. This includes things like silverware, electronic components, toiletries, and miscellaneous small objects.

Medium Box

This is the standard moving box that you see. It is able to hold 3.0 cubic feet. They offer a wide range of use, generally used for clothing, shoes, and miscellaneous nonfragile larger items.

Large Box

These boxes hold up to 4.5 cubic feet, but since they are not reinforced with an extra layer, they should not be over-packed with heavy objects. Typically, they will hold lighter and bulkier objects, such as linens, pillows, toys, and blankets.

Dish Pack

This box is larger than the standard box, capable of holding 5.0 cubic feet of space. It is made of double reinforced cardboard to provide extra support for breakables. Used typically for the kitchen, this box can safely hold fragile dishware, glassware, china, and other breakables.

Mirror Carton

These adjustable cartons are capable of fitting almost any size picture or mirror, so long as they do not exceed the dimensions of 40” x 60”. They are able to form to the shape of your artwork, providing extra support to ensure protection throughout the move.

Book Carton

Per the name, these boxes are used for the purpose of holding books. Just like the dish pack, these boxes are double reinforced, and are the same size as the small boxes because any larger amount of heavy books would become difficult to carry safely in a larger box. They can also hold records, CD’s, video tapes, video games, and electronics.

Wardrobe Box

These boxes are perfect for an easy method of transporting clothing in your closet. They are tall boxes that have a metal rod fixed to the top of them, allowing for a direct transfer of your clothes from the closet with minimal effort, remaining on their hangers and unwrinkled.

Pro Tip: Most movers will offer a free consultation where they estimate the amount of boxes you need. After they do this ask them for the list and source the boxes yourself - often you can get them at a cheaper price in bulk from a local retailer. If you need help packing them, ask your mover about having them assist.
