6 Tips for Moving With Pets

Moving can be just as confusing and unsettling of an experience for your pets as it is for you and the rest of your family. Here are some tips to make moving easier for you and your four-legged friends.

Remember routines!

Anyone who owns a pet can tell you that pets know their daily routines, and they like to stick to them. Moving can disrupt a lot of things in your life, so sticking to important routines can be just as healthy and productive for you as it is for your four-legged friend. Try as much as possible to stick to your pet’s normal feeding and sleeping routine during your move and continue to take them for regular walks and spend leisure time with them.

Make them feel at home!

Be sure to set up your pet’s space in your new home relatively soon after moving in. Not only does this make it easier for them to adjust, but it will make your job easier as you continue to care for them. Bring familiar items like toys or beds to help your pet adjust and feel comfortable in their new environment.

Keep them out of the way during the move.

Moving day often involves a lot of strange people coming in and out of the house, and having your dog or cat around during it all can be just as unpleasant for them as it is disruptive for anyone helping with the move. Keep them isolated in a side room, back yard, or even bring them over to a familiar friend’s house to stay until after all the commotion!

Introduce them to the neighbors.

When you arrive in your new neighborhood, be sure to introduce yourself and your pets to your new neighbors and their own pets. Introducing everybody early can help create and maintain friendly relationships and avoid any testy incidents or territorial disputes.

Prepare them for the trip!

If you have to drive a long distance to get to your new home, remember that your pet may not be as prepared for the road trip as you are. Get them familiar with their kennel or crate in advance of the big trip and be sure to stop often along the way to let them stretch their legs and use the bushes.

Keep yourself happy and healthy.

Pets are often highly empathetic and closely attuned to your own emotions. They can tell when you’re stressed or upset, and it often affects their mood just as much as yours!
